Sony XBR5 46" (3600$)

Where ever you are paying $3600 for the Sony XBR5 46", your paying to much. I just payed $2400 for the XBR4 46" and the difference between the XBR4 and 5 are not worth $1200

I would either by a top of the line denon or sunfire, and buy top of the line diy speaker parts. My logic on building speakers is that I would save a lot of money. Of course, I would make it simple enough so that I don't mess up building the speakers. I would probably buy a really good hsu sub. After this, lets say I only have 10 grand left. I would then buy a pioneer 1080p kuro and wait for a good blu-ray player that costs less (haha). Then I would save the rest for the future and buy my dad new speakers.

If you are going to diy speakers you HAVE to diy for your sub. That is where diy turns from saving money into building a monster that will make you wonder if your foundation will hold up. Trust me, commercial subs cannot even come close...

True, but when I typed that post I was thinking that I would screw up making the sub haha.

haha, subs are by far the easiest diy project. A small amount of woodworking skills is all you need. For speakers all you have to do is add a little soldering know how and you are set. Ive been really busy lately but soon I will throw together a short guide to show all my fellow ps3 owners how easy diy can be. I am actually building my center as we speak.

I'm a bit of a music and video snob so I would have:

Bowers & Wilkins 800 series speakers all around. $5500 for 803S fronts. $2500 for center channel. $2800 for 805S sides. Total $11,000.
Marantz 8002 receiver. $2000.
Bryston 4B-SST amp two channel amp for front speakers. $3500
PS3 for blu rays. $400
Monoprice wires, connectors and cables. $100.
Subwoofer $1000 budget, probably a HSU or SVS.
Sony LCD XBR4 52" tv. $3200.

I went over by just a little, but the prices marked are about retail. I would be able to get a discount especially if I bought many things together. I also waver between B&W and Paradigm Signatures for the speakers, but either way the cost would be about the same.

Not sure what I'd get but I'm thinking of having my own Home Theatre room in the basement of my house (I'm 18 and already thinking of what I'll do . Won't be out of the house till around 26, gives me about 3 years of work right out of College). 106" Screen, 1080P projector, Blu-Ray player, etc.

Marantz MM8003 8 Channel Power Amplifier ($2399.99)

Sony BDP-S1 ($1299.99)
Definitive Technology Mythos St Superpower ($1799 each)x2
Definitive Technology Mythos Eight ($699)
Definitive Technology Mythos Gem XL ($349)x4
Definitive Technology SuperCube Reference Sub ($1899)
Sony KDS-R60XBR2 60" SXRD ($2499) <===While supplies last

Those speakers are awesome, but, your receiver amp is underpowered for the setup. You will need to push 400w continuous for those babies. Just sayin'.

Not really, only if you are watching movies. I know a few people that have the Kuro and they love my XBR4 for games

But, of course, I love their Pioneers (actually an elite kuro) for watching movies.

Lintama,
No audiophile will ever so no to more power. But given the budget constraints I think the Marantz and Bryston would be plenty of power for anywhere up to small theatre setups.

The 800 B&W series is fairly efficient (90db sensitivity). Here are the recommended amp power ratings for the speakers:
803S: 50 to 250w. I would power these with the 300w/ch Bryston, which would have more than enough power to satisfy the 803s.
The Marantz is rated 125 x 7, but would only be asked to power three speakers in my setup. The 805s sides are only rated 50 to 120w. The HTMS3 center channel is 50 to 250w.
Altogether the 3 speakers would not be that big of a load for the Marantz unless you are really getting into large home theatre applications. Not 52" tv setups in the dedicated videogame/movie/music room.

True, but one of the reasons i made this thread was in the thinking that w/a little bit of research you can assemble a killer HT. It took me years to get mine done, but im really happy w/the final product. I also wanted others to learn about other pieces of equipment that theyve never heard of till know. Theres so much good stuff out there, that w/a little bit of knowledge one can piece together a nice HT w/in their budget maybe it be 1K up to 20k and beyond
