O.K. the question is what options do I have for getting sound from my PS3 when connected to a 19" widescreen monitor without sound? I take it the only option I have is to connect speakers via optical out. USB speakers would not work bacause they are not listed as a sound device, right? Also I keep hearing about a video game y cable adapter for connecting to the 3.5 mm jack, what is this?

You can output through optical, or RCA. If you want to connect to PC speakers, output through RCA and use this: http://www.amazon.com/Console-Adapter-Convert-Plugs-Single/dp/B0006U3ACY

this will work fine...but keep in mind you will NOT be getting true 5.1 channel sound....it will be 2 channel sound coming out of all speakers....which is NOT real surround sound...

Would this also work for an Xbox 360? The only reason I ask this is because I don't know if the 360 can output sound when there are two different cables connected. For example a 360 connected via dvi to Hdmi cable with sound coming from rca connection. Also, what brand of low-end to mid-range pc speakers would you recommend. (Altec Lansing etc.) Lastly, thanks for the quick responses guys.

I know, but I am looking for a inexpensive set of speakers for my set-up. Yes. I would buy a 5.1 setup with optical output if I can find one cheap enough.

I recommend Logitech speakers. Even their cheaper ones are good.

O.K. how about these speakers: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3296568&CatId=2893
Are they any good, the customer reviews seem to say so.
