You can download their album "the slip", free and legal :D
It's available in mp3, flac, m4a, and high definition wave all with no drm.

Here's the link: http://dl.nin.com/theslip/signup

I'm not a huge fan but I do own their With Teeth album which wasn't bad at all.

Downloading this now...thanks for the link. I'll be posting my impressions later.

Thanks!
I don't listen to a lot of NIN but what I have heard I like a lot.

EDIT: Oh wow! I love this album. I really glad Reznor went ahead and released it for free, it's a really great album. It's got a great blend of heavy rock and creepy instrumental songs (Corono Radiata and The Fours of Us are Dying). So far, I like Discipline and Head Down the best, but overall it's a really great album. Definately worth the 46 minutes it takes to listen to it.
I only have two criticisms at this point: All the songs (except for the two instrumentals) start with a drum intro, which leaves no variation. The second nitpick is the intro song: 999, 999. I think it's terrible.

I say yay to the trend of established musicians making their music available for download for free! Radiohead's done it too -- hopefully it'll keep working, and groups will keep offering it!

I think I read somewhere that their next album won't be free.

I don't mean for NIN -- I mean for musicians in general. Certainly, all albums can't be free, music is still these guys' jobs, and they have to make money at the end of the day. Ideally would be a system like Radiohead's recent release, where you could pay whatever you wanted (including nothing at all) to download their album. Basically, you donated as much (or as little) money as you wanted to, or could spare. Of course, that won't always work because it's natural for people to hang onto their money, but in an ideal world... it'd be perfect. (It worked out for them, too -- they made millions.)
