How about putting a primitive program together that when you start a new topic searches the forums to make sure it hasn't been posted before, if it has it will send you a message explaining that the topic has been posted before.
So what do you think?

It's not that simple. A lot of repeated topics arn't exactly the same. Meaning I have a report from Site#1 and a report from Site#2 and both have the same news. But both reports have a different way of saying that news, to avoid plagerism.
What would make more sense is if you just took the time do press the "search" button on your toolbar up top, and manually looked for a repeated post.
Unless you are posting something that's more than a couple weeks old, then when you search the original thread should at least be on the first 3 pages.

I would say you make a rule about only posting articles from certain sources. I.E. the sources that are reliable and/or have something to do with gaming. This would eliminate the thousands of posts we get about the stuff 'insert non-gaming analyst' made up, or CNN's breaking news about something we knew weeks ago.

Perfect Sin described it pretty well. There's usually a dozen articles from different sources that are very similar. And thanks to Google News, people can recieve each and every one of these articles and their reason for posting it is simply because it is from another source.
I think that people just need to think a few seconds before posting an article, and take the time to make sure it hasn't been posted. Also, the Stickies need to be used for all these price prediction and PS3 online threads. I don't mind the occaisional article that's related to these things to be posted individually, as long as there is some solid news. For all the speculation going around now though, I think most of it could go in the Stickies.

Yes I think your right....
but I think we need a new system in the stickies posts as well , I mean it's so hard to navigate through a post which was started a year ago, with people posting there initial reactions at the time.
I don't know but perhaps rhings like sub-threads/topics to break them into more sections?

We have already given the Admins a phpBB hack that seperates the stickies / Announcements from the Posts.
When the site recieves it's rennovation, that hack will most likely go into play.

No what I mean is way of navigating in between the posts themselves besides through the pages.
For example admins would decide after a thread had 10 pages they would begin to separate it into sections on what those posts were about, it would make finding individual pieces of info easier to find on the forum.

It would also take hours and hours of staff time each day to do, and we simply can't physically do that. Its difficult, I agree, but its the best we can do at the moment with the current phpBB2 software.
