Your PS3 will never support "high definition sound" through the optical cable. Nor does your DVD/Theatre system. But you should check to see if your audio settings are set up correctly through your PS3, and also check the settings for the Auxiliary input for your theatre kit.
It's not the cables and it's not the PS3 that is causing the poor sound problem. It has to be how you have set it up.

Hi all,
i ave my ps3 hooke through the optical to my sony dvd player who has a 5.1 dolby surround system...it's a very cheap system, 4 yrs ago ipayed 400$ the whole set...anyway when i play dvd or cds straight from the dvd player the sound is awesome...but when i use ps3 the souns is too bad!!! i cannot here high sounds when playing music and some voices when i play movies...
is it possible that i do something wrong in te set up or my dvd palye cant support the ps3 high definition sound?

hahhaha yeh now it's ur thread...weird!
anyway, i think the set up of my DVD/theather system are fine....cannot play with it too much thoug, i think it's the way the ps3 is connected...
you know when u set up audio u have tho choes between different formats?
now icant remember which formats, but i always chose te first two!
then there are also othe ption in the menu lke audio bitrate, linear pcm...that i teally dont know...anyone can suggest?

In the settings, choose Optical output and choose automatic setup. Then choose bitstream. I think that's basically the best settings for you. You don't want to use Linear PCM, it won't work right for you.
