I'm getting dish network in a few days, and with the package I'm getting dvr. What are the restrictions on dvrs? If I wanted to take a few videos off of it, and put it on my pc, would I be able to?
And to anyone who has Dish Network, how do the HD channels look?

I had no idea that BTTF was available in HD, will it be released on blu-ray anytime soon?

I have Dishnetwork and the DVR as well. And yes you can transfer the stuff to the PC. I bought a kit from Bestbuy (forget the name) and basically it allows you to plug in composite cables in to one end, then the opposite end is a USB cable to connect to the PC.
The only problem is Dish puts something in the DVR file so you can't burn a DVD of the file.
You can View and play the file just fine off the PC but not in a DVD player or anything.
I know it's the DVR because I had TimeWarner Cable before the Dish DVR and the Cable DVR allowed me to transfer and Burn to DVD just fine.
Perhaps some of the newer Dish DVR's are different. but I'm not sure. (I have the 622 (silver) Dual Tuner/HD DVR.
or perhaps there is a different/better process that would work.

They've been showing a lot of great movies lately on some of the HD channels. Jaws, Aliens, Alien, 2001, Planet of the Apes.

yeah i seen some of those and i finally was able to watch all the Planet of the apes movies and HD and really enjoyed them and last night they showed Queen Rocks Montreal on Rave HD and i only wished i knew about it earlier this way i could have recorded it since i have the SD version of it. i was only able to catch the last two songs since i was watching the movie Christine on Monsters HD (Fav HD Channel).

Yeah so I was pretty impressed with the sd channels on dish. I turned it on a hdtv channel, looked pretty good, but something wasn't right. I hit display on my tv remote, and I'm only getting 480p on my HD channels! I'm using an HDMI cable to my onkyo 705, and from there to my tv with another HDMI cable. so is there some kind of setting I should put it on? I think my dish was the 722 (also got a dish for local channels), not sure what the receiver model is, but its a dvr.

did they set your resolution to 1080i when they set up your dish?

I would suggest you seriously look at DirecTV instead of Dish. I've had both and for HD content DirecTV blows Disn Network away. Their HR20 DVR has come a long way as well and is finally a good DVR. A year ago I would have said differently.

Yeah, I switched from Dish Network to Direct TV about a year ago. Direct TV is definitely the top tier when it comes to HD channels, but Dish Network is a step in the right direction considering you were on comcast.

No, I read the manual and set it myself. The guy must have forgot.

Well, I already have dish network installed now. Made the switch to dish because it was a much better deal than comcast. We got top 250 package and their ultimate hd package, plus upgraded our phone through at&t to include unlimited long distance for less than what we were paying for comcast HD and internet + phone from at&t.
Direct TV was never really in the plans.

Yeah, there seems to be way more hd content on there than comcast.
