I have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI to my 1080p Samsung 650. Amazing PQ. Then I hooked up my PS2, looks horrible. Everything is soft/unfocussed.

Is this because it is analog, or because it can't support 1080, or something else?

Will buying a component connection cable for the PS2 fix the image? I know it will never look like the PS3, but it should be at least equal to standard def I would suspect.

Yes, RGB component will give you a better picture, Not only does it separate the RGB signal for a more crisper sharper picture but it also supports progressive scan.
so yeah upgrade

i have my ps2 hooked up to a 4661f, 1080p lcd, by component and it looks decent enough to play games. still seems like a lot grain is in there but obviously the ps2 can support a 720/1080 output. i will say that reading text and overall clearness of the picture on screen came after i switch to component. hope that helps

I won't go as far as to say it "fixes" problems. It will allow for games to be broadcasted in 480p resolution vs 480i resolution (and to be honest I believe its only for certain titles that support the feature, not all games will be diplayed in prograssive scan). 480p is an upgrade from the interlaced cousin, however when you are viewing the output on a 1080p TV you will most likely (definitely) still notice that softness/unfocussed look that you described. In the end, if you still play alot of PS2 games off of your PS2 console, it might be worth it to grab the component cables.

I saw a huge difference switching from composite to component on my SDTV. It will definitely help, if only for color reproduction.
