Is it possible to get Dolby Digital Output in games (using GTA 4 right now) via HDMI? It works fine for movies via HDMI but in games all it shows is multich on my receiver.
Hardware:
PS3 40 GB
Onkyo TX-SR605
I am using Bitstream via HDMI as well.

I'm not positive, but it may be giving you uncompressed PCM in 5.1/7.1 and if this is the case, you're better off. Does anyone know if GTA4 has uncompressed audio?

You shouldn't be using Bitstream....... LinearPCM is what you want.
Otherwise you won't be getting the higher quality audio, especially off of movies.

i didn't even know you could bitstream the audio when playing games??
for me to get DD output from the PS3 i have to go into the audio settings and un-check all formats that it will let me....down to 5.1 DD 5.1 DTS and a couple of 2.0 PCM formats...
for the OP....i also have the 605 and i would just let it output as PCM....and make sure your listening mode is set to "multichannel" and not "direct"....this is the way to get the high quality audio that is stored on BD's and games....
NOW...as far as movies stored to your hard drive this can be a different story....one of the limitations of the 605 is that it CANNOT perform much post processing on multichannel (5.1 or 7.1) PCM sources...so you are limited to "direct" sound, or "multichannel" which adds a little bit of boost to the sound and more punch....but it cannot matrix 5.1 content to 7.1 sadly....so here is what i do and it seems to work the best for me....
when watching Blu-ray movies...Linear PCM all the way....5.1 high def audio is better than 7.1 "matrixed" DD any day of the week for me...
when playing PS3 games...leave all output formats selected...let it output as PCM audio...
when watching a DVD...i've had mixed results, but a lot of times i bitstream DVD audio...I find that when the receiver decodes the audio i get much more punch and quality...plus since its a DVD and usually 5.1 DD or DTS you can matrix the sound to all 7 channels....
when watching movies stored to my hard drive...i take the time and go to the audio settings menu and de-select all output formats other than 5.1 DD, 5.1 DTS, and the couple 2.0channel PCM outputs that it won't let you un-check....that way the PS3 outputs my DD 5.1 movies from the Hard Drive in DD and i can matrix them to 7.1...
i think if you follow that you will get the best results from your 605....
if you're dead set on ALWAYS outputting in DD or DTS sound....then go to the audio settings and select manual....and un-check everything but what you want...
