What are you favorite WTF is this crap movies?
What I mean by that is:
You are a movie producer/director/studio head and you get a script and are just like, WTF is this crap, but you see something/someone in it that could make it big and you take a chance. Next thing you know you got a phenomenon on your hands.

Here are some examples:
Pulp Fiction (my favorite)
Being John Malkovich
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Fight Club
Clockwork Orange
True Romance
Raising Arizona
Chopper (Australia)
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Aww... Geez.... that's a list of great movies and it's tough to pick. Fight Club, John Malkovich, Clockwork Orange

I'd say Pulp Fiction myself, but just to be different, I'm going to say Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. This one just caught me by surprise. I never even thought about seeing it, but in my senior year of high school, after we finished AP testing, my English teacher got lazy and just started playing movies and this was one of them. If you haven't seen it yet, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Donnie Darko is the only other film I can think of at the moment, well there are other that simply make you go WTF but aren't that huge like:

The Machinist
Switchblade Romance

What about The Sixth Sense?

Eternal Sunshine is a brilliant film. As is Donnie Darko.

I've seen a couple of films, which i don't think are very well known called:
- You And Me And Everyone We Know
- Erasable You

[edit] I'm missing the point aren't i? It's meant to be films that go on to be a huge success...oh well.

For those of you who love Eternal Sunshine and haven't seen Being John Malkovich, GO SEE IT.
It is Charlie Kaufman at his best. That guy is a crazy genius. He also did Adaptation which is very cool and very weird like the ones above.

Donnie Darko kicks ***, I forgot about that one. One of those that gets better every time you see it. I didn't put Sixth Sense because I didn't think it was that crazy of an idea, but considering the nobody (at the time) who wrote it maybe it belongs. Haven't seen the other 2 yet.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? It wasnt really huge when it came out but over time it has a big cult following...

I also thought about that one, but didn't include it since it was known story about a very famous person. Although, Dep and Del Toro were maybe the only ones that could have pulled it off!

Speed? Sandra Bullock and Keeanu Reeves were both small-time actors in this small-time movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean.

Just try to think back to before it was made, before everyone went mad over Johnny Depp. People making a -movie- from an amusement park -ride-? WTF?

I guess you could say The Matrix right? I mean on script that would sound like the weirdest shi* ever, turned out to be pretty awesome. I am not including the other two in this, I found them to be terrible. The original was brilliant because of its WTF moments, trying to explain them in sequels ruined it.
Night Watch and Day Watch maybe? I've seen both heaps and still don't understand them, but I liked what I saw and the entire movies are WTF throughout.
Pulp Fiction rules by the way. I have a 'friend' who didn't like it because it wasn't in chronological order..... I am serious.

all I can say just watch an episode of The Critic; other than that I would probably say Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, Four Rooms, Joe's Apartment or This is Spinal Tap.

The One
i mean... you take a few reletively unknown (at the time) actors... base it off multiple universes... then have Jet Li fight.... Jet Li.... Brilliant!

Good call! I totally agree -- watching The Matrix for the first time, particularly since I did so early enough to avoid the discussion/spoilers afterward, was a total mind-blowing experience. Also, QFT about the sequels. *shudder*
