Aaron Eckhart: Not just another pretty face in 'The Dark Knight' (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-ca-echkart-2008may04,0,932553.story)

PLAYING A VILLAIN: Eckhart says director Christopher Nolan “is going way farther than people think” with Two-Face.

His appearance as Two-Face has been overshadowed. That should end once the movie's out.
By Geoff Boucher, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
May 4, 2008
THE trailers for "The Dark Knight" have shown quite a bit of Heath Ledger's scabbier, surlier reinvention of the Joker (think of Malcolm McDowell's thug from "A Clockwork Orange" but with kelp-colored hair, scars and a hyena laugh), but the producers have been keeping the film's other Batman bad guy, Two-Face, under wraps. ¶ "That's right, people don't really know yet," actor Aaron Eckhart said with grin. "I can tell you that, basically, when you look at Two-Face, you should get sick to your stomach. Being the guy under all that, well, that was a lot of fun for me. It's like you would feel if you met someone whose face had pretty much been ripped off or burned off with acid. I can't talk about it beyond that because I don't want to give away too much of the plans by Chris." ¶ Chris is Christopher Nolan, the director of "Batman Begins," the acclaimed 2005 franchise reboot, and of "The Dark Knight," the sequel that hits theaters July 18 with a tale that looks far darker and more psychological than the other, sunnier superhero fare this summer. The darkness goes beyond the screen as well; 28-year-old Ledger died in January in New York after an accidental overdose of sleeping pills.

The death of Ledger and the word of his incendiary performance in this film have made him the natural focus of early media coverage of "The Dark Knight." But Nolan told The Times this year that the foundation of the film is the tale and transformation of Eckhart's character, Harvey Dent, from a crusading Gotham City prosecutor to Harvey Two-Face, a maniac whose face is ravaged on one side by a horrible injury.

On the campy 1960s "Batman" television series, the writers imported pretty much every major villain from the namesake comic book -- the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin and Catwoman, etc. -- but not Two-Face. He was simply too gross. In the comic books, the wounds come from a splash of acid thrown at the attorney by a gangster on the witness stand, but there are hints that in this film it might be the Joker who is responsible for the scars.

Eckhart won't discuss that, but he did say that the wounds are structurally deeper than in the comics: "There are fans on the Internet who have done artist's versions of what they think it will look like, and I can tell you this: They're thinking small; Chris is going way farther than people think."

There were plenty of name actors lined up hoping to get the role of Two-Face, but in the end Nolan went with Eckhart because of his "complexity and this aura he has of a good man pushed too far," Nolan said. Two-Face in the film is more of a vigilante hunting down the Joker than he is a criminal, as he has most often been portrayed in the comics. His trademark is flipping a two-headed coin, one side defaced, the other pristine, and letting its landing determine his actions, often in situations where he has a gun to someone's head.

"The difference between Batman and Two-Face is how far they are willing to go and how they make their point," Eckhart said. "Otherwise, we're talking about vigilante crime-fighting. That's what Batman is all about. He has a strong sense of justice. And Harvey Dent has an extremely strong sense of justice. His fiancée is killed. He's horribly injured. But he is still true to himself. He's a crime fighter, he's not killing good people. He's not a bad guy, not purely."

The 40-year-old, square-jawed Eckhart has a history of playing authority figures pulled away from the bright path. He was a cop on a path to destruction in "The Black Dahlia," the slick tobacco lobbyist in "Thank You for Smoking," the junior executive looking to punish women in Neil LaBute's "In the Company of Men," all of them roles in which bad deeds are simple to see but bad men are hard to recognize.

"You look at a good guy too long and it's not that exciting, it's the Boy Scout always doing the right thing," Eckhart said. "I'm interested in good guys gone wrong. They're not the bad guy, they're the good guy doing bad things."

He joins a franchise with a deep roster of serious actors onboard: "The Dark Knight" has career-surging Christian Bale back in the cape and Gary Oldman as Gotham's only honest cop, Jim Gordon, as well as Oscar winners Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. Maggie Gyllenhaal steps in for Katie Holmes as prosecutor Rachel Dawes, the romantic interest of Bruce Wayne.

"My guy identifies with everybody in the movie," Eckhart said. "Really, all of it is more than an adventure tale, it's somewhat of a mirror of our times. It deals with some fundamental questions of what's going on in society. To me, this film is about how Batman feels about justice, how he takes care of the city, how he feels about the Joker when he meets him and sees what he is capable of doing. How he feels when Harvey Two-Face takes matters into his own hands. It's not simple, and it gets ugly. I think people will be surprised."

Finally we are getting more information about two face.

The New Dark Knight Trailer!

Source: Superhero Hype!
May 4, 2008

Warner Bros. Pictures has brought online the new trailer for Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=15813), hitting conventional theaters and IMAX on July 18. The Batman Begins follow-up stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

In the film, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good with the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Eckhart). The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker (Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

I read in an interview and Aaron Eckhart said that people were thinking to small on the scale of the scarring. He said Nolan is going much bigger on it, meaning it should be pretty gruesome if that's what he means.

The image is an unofficial leak from Warner -- no word yet on whether it's the official Two-Face, or just concept art, but it is actually from Warner. Just, you know, unofficially.

I've just been thrilled since they cast Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent -- I knew it would be fantastic. He's going to be even less of a cut-and-dry villain than he was in the comics.

Here's the skinny on what I know about him:
It seems, from what Eckhart, Nolan and the trailers have said or revealed, that the Joker is responsible for Dent's fiance, and for the acid burns on Dent's face that turn him into Two-Face. Both Two-Face and Batman are vigilante crime fighters -- Eckhart has been quoted as saying that the difference between the two, what makes one a hero and one a villain, is the lengths to which they'll go for justice, and where the line between justice and revenge rests. Eckhart says that Dent isn't a bad guy, not really.

Dent only becomes Two-Face at the end of TDK, which guarantees a third film -- you don't sign someone like Eckhart for a teaser that won't lead to a movie. Anyway, as if we had any doubt? ;)

The Early word on the NEXT Batman Sequel

Planning for a third Batman movie is already underway and a spy from Cinema Blend (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Scoop-Batman-3-Story-Details-8738.html) has uncovered some of the details about where Batman goes he’s finished with the Joker in The Dark Knight.

http://api.ning.com/files/n5748T7-nM-PLUQhCqXwu*YcxiyKXQ2PfgqTAiapGouEidlafuLL4YiY5397N 38hSpSRsmuCheFj88cYOZpQKdnnMtnAXdrQ/TheDarkKnightBatman1230.jpg
The Joker really is out of the picture after The Dark Knight. He was supposed to be back for another film, and that they did consider recasting heath Ledger's part for Batman 3, but Joker has been written out of the Batman 3 script.

It looks like Batman 3 will continue with his story of Two-Face. According to the source, the third film will be referencing the Batman graphic novels “The Long Halloween” and “Dark Victory”. If story follows the books that means we'll get intrduced to Robin as well.

The source says Christopher Nolan will be back as Director for Batman 3… but only Batman 3. Whether the series goes on from there is anybody’s guess, but all indications are that no matter what happens Nolan quits the world of Batman after the third one, and moves on to something else

Good thing Nolan has said he hates robin and also said he will quit directing if he has to use robin.

ROFL! The way you said that as if there is no hope for the Boy Wonder. I like Robin, he's not my favorite character but **** Grayson played his part. Todd and Drake ehhh. I like how Nolan has handled the franchise; he definitely knows best so whatever he wants I'm with. I hope his brother writes the next film as well, just a terrific writer. God 12am at Lincoln Center; standing on that line to see my two favorite characters in literature brought to screen the right way. Makes me feel like a kid again.

Well, it's true Robin won't show up in Nolan's Gotham, but that's not to say he won't show up after Batman 3. Personally, I don't think he has any business in this new dark, gritty Gotham Nolan's created for us, but if they do make a Batman 4 and beyond, someone else will be at the helm.

We can cross our fingers for Guillermo del Toro, and that if Robin does show up, that he's a character at least as dark and scary as Bale's Bruce Wayne -- destroyed by the deaths of his family, and bent on revenge. No neon costumes and "Holy jeepers creepers, Batman!" from him.

I really like the "fairy tale" in del Toro's directing. In my opinion, he'd be the perfect mix between Nolan and Tim Burton. I'm not sure about Hellboy II, simply because I thought Hellboy I was absolutely hilarious (not in a good way). It's hard to get psyched about the second in a series if you didn't like the first -- though I have to admit I'm getting excited in spite of myself for The Hulk movie. Edward Norton, yum yum yum!

Del Toro Will be busy directing "The Hobbit". I agree I don't think Robin will be in the movies but what the blog said was if the 3rd installment follows the two batman comics then robin will be in them.

I think Nolan captures the feel of Gotham better than Burton and Schumacher. I don't think Del Toro could create something that touches Nolan's level of excellence. If anything let Frank direct the next one. After all he is the man that brought the character back to life in the 80s. He is the man that gave Nolan the image to work off of. I wish the Nolan Bros and Bale could do all the batman flicks though.

I think that the time it takes for The Dark Knight to come out, get reviewed, be successful/unsuccessful, for the studios to decide to make a third on, for Nolan to actually make Batman 3, and then for people to start looking for a new director for Batman 4, del Toro will be finished with The Hobbit, AND its sequel. ;)

@Stewie:
I do agree that Nolan's the best so far. I think I just have a soft spot for the Burton eerie-ness, possibly because Catwoman was so freaking amazing in those movies. I agree, I wish he could always direct them. But, then again, directing all different kinds of movies is what makes them grow and stay hot.

I'm pretty sure thats what Nolan intended. I think he even said it in press-interviews.

However, this movie is going to be the absolute shizzle. I don't know how I feel about the whole re-casting / not casting The Joker in Batman 3.

I mean, also would guys like too see him locked up in Arkham / killed in a dramatic fashion, something cool you know, like Batsy loosing it.

I, for one, would not have been okay with going to see Batman 3 if they'd recast Joker. It looks like Heath Ledger's performance as Joker is going to be absolutely amazing -- I'd claim Oscar-material just from the trailers -- and recasting that role from a dead man would be... well, tasteless, for one, and not good business sense for another, because whoever took on the role would be hard-pressed to live up to Ledger's performance, and moviegoers worldwide would complain and be disappointed no matter how good the new Joker would be.

But, on the flip side, Aaron Eckhart's going to make an absolutely fabulous Two-Face. I'm thrilled he'll be around for Batman 3, and that he has such an in-depth take on his character.

I couldn't agree with that anymore. That was one of the reasons I wouldn't want to see Joker recast, just in sheer respect of Ledger and how he's portrayed the character. And yes Oscar-worthy.

And also nice point about Eckhart, Nolan and his vigilante Two Face should be good, and it should also delve more into Batman character about the wrong and right.

These movies have so far and will live up too my expectations just by trailers, and Begins.

Yeah, I love the promise of the buckets of worms to be opened up by vigilante Two Face. It'll force Bruce Wayne to really look at himself, and I think he'll probably hit a cross-roads -- see the one direction he could go down, the path taken by Harvey Dent, and see the other direction he could turn. I think horror at the lengths Dent's willing to go to as Two-Face will teach Wayne a few things, solidify him as a fighter for justice rather than for revenge.

You can throw the Joker death out the window LOL. He gets tossed in Arkham at the end of this film. I had got news on the script from a friend of mine a long time ago. Yup, it was either Goyer or Nolan or both who said that it was stupid to kill of the Joker in the first Batman movie. Hence, why he is going into Arkham. He is suppose to be in the third movie, no idea if that's going to happen now or not.

Just I'm not sure if I am keen to see Joker recast, I mean if he is, then I don't know if the actor is going to live up to the hype Ledger gave us, or, and I am saying this without even having seen the movie yet and only trailers, but performace that Ledger has gave.

All in all this movie is going to be amazing.

Oh an' BTW, I found that quote I was referring too...

For Two-Face's make-up, Eckhart warned, "When you look at [him], you should get sick to your stomach. Being the guy under all that, well, that was a lot of fun for me. It's like you would feel if you met someone whose face had pretty much been ripped off or burned off with acid [...] There are fans on the Internet who have done artist's versions of what they think it will look like, and I can tell you this: They're thinking small; Chris is going way farther than people think.

I think it was decided to be his cape. I saw on this site which broke down the caps for clues.

Although I like the idea of it being Lucius, although I love Morgan Freeman and the character.

EDIT - Also where did Nolan say he took his inspiration from for the Joker, in The Killing Joke, did he get his face slashed in order to get a big grin.

Just because I found something in Batman Confidential with him getting his face opened by a batarang.

We don't know how he got the scars and in the movie we know nothing about him. This isn't about how the Joker becomes the Joker, it's about his rise as the Joker. Mostly everything is from The Killing Joker if I remember, not to sure if they used anything else.
