Ok guys, I need your help in trying to understand something. I put in a BD that is 5.1 Dolby TrueHD and have my ps3 set to output audio via hdmi LPCM. When I do this, I get sound through my fronts, sides, center, and sub. My question is if its only 5.1, why doesn't it output to my rears instead of my sides?? It just seems illogical to me. Thanks for your help.
Recap My Setup: 60gb PS3 outputting via hdmi LPCM, Onkyo TX-SR605, 7.1 speaker config.
Edit: I just changed it to bitstream and it then allows me to matrix it to 7.1, but I have read on here that having it set up that way wont get me the new DTS HD MA.

Bitstream won't get you TrueHD either.
In a 7.1 set up you should still see the "side" speakers are rear ones, at least they should sound that way if you have them set up properly.
I suppose you can see this as a receiver issue as well, you should be able to apply PLIIX processing to LPCM... or at least you'd hope to.

Nope, all I can do is either select Multichannel or Direct when I LPCM. When I bitstream, I can PLIIX. As far as setup, im in a college apt so everything is in my bedroom. Once I move into my own apt next month, everything will be in the living room so my setup should be better.

Yeah that's one of the main reasons I stepped up to the 705. I had read that the 605 cannot matrix 5.1 PCM sources.
As I understand it, in a 7.1 setup, the rears are the "extra" speakers. 5.1 is sub, center channel, front channels, and side channels. 7.1 is sub, center, fronts, sides, and rears.

So is it safe to assume that the 705 is everything the 605 is, just better in that respect? What else is better, that you know of? I know that with some electronics just because a model is higher, it might not include some features that the lower one does, so I want to be safe before thinking about investing in yet another receiver.

the 605 can NOT matric 5.1 PCM sources to 7.1....that is my biggest complaint about the unit...but i knew that going in so its not a big deal...

Yep, that's why it pays to research. That's one of the reasons I'll(hopefully) be getting the 705. But bills, and funds for a 3-week road trip out west come before that hehe.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like I will be looking to sell my 605 and upgrade. Might as well wait to see what Onkyo is offering for their 2008 lineup and either grab one of those, or the 705 then as it should be cheaper.

THX Select2 certification
DSD Processing
3 DSPs vs. unspecified number
Phono input
digital output
3 vs. 2 HDMI inputs
7.1 pre outs vs. subwoofer out only
RS232
IR Input
12v Trigger
Learning Remote

Is it just the 605 that can't matrix 5.1 to 7.1 LPCM?
I'd hate to get new Yamaha 1800 and find out it couldn't matrix that!

The Yamaha 1800 can certainly do that. Yamaha makes great stuff too.
