So yeah, Spielberg got rights for this. BEWARE!
DreamWorks has acquired rights to the Japanese manga "Ghost in the Shell" with plans to adapt the futuristic police thriller as a 3-D live-action feature.

Story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.

Created by Masamune Shirow, "Ghost in the Shell" was first published in 1989. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three videogames. The second anime film, "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence," was released in the U.S. by DreamWorks in 2004.

Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and brought the project to the studio. Jamie Moss has been tapped to pen the adaptation.

Universal and Sony were also chasing "Ghost in the Shell," but Steven Spielberg took personal interest in the property and made it happen at DreamWorks.

" 'Ghost in the Shell' is one of my favorite stories," Spielberg said. "It's a genre that has arrived, and we enthusiastically welcome it to DreamWorks."

DreamWorks prexy of production Adam Goodman said "Ghost in the Shell" is a property "that epitomizes 3-D live-action motion picture possibilities."

Avi Arad is at the forefront of comicbook-based material, having produced the three "Spider-Man" films, the three "X-Men" movies, the two "Fantastic Four" picss and the upcoming "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk."

Moss' writing credits include "Street Kings," which bowed Friday, and "Last Man Home," in development at Universal.

Hmmmm, is he going to get Michael Bay to direct that too or will he direct it himself?

I honestly don't know how to feel about this. I'm somewhat excited and somewhat nervous about how it will turn out.

Was about to post this, i'm a massive Gits fan and hopefully this is done the way it deserves to be. Can't wait to see what's gonna happen.

hmm, well this could go both ways. GITS is a very mature anime, like Appleseed. I don't know how well EX Machina did, but Shirows work has probably been the most popular and noticable in the US, behind Studio Ghibli of course.

Shirow-san is probably honored to have Spielberg working on it, even if it doesn't turn out to be worthy of his work I'm sure the fans will check it out.

Have to wait and see how well it's going to be, but I'll watch it.

Kusanagi Motoko is one of the best heroines of all anime

If they're going to get Tachikomas for this movie, they better not use an android type voice, it'll ruin it

I hope berg has good intel on GITS, if he does he'll do multiple movies on the laughing man arc, best of the series. People in the US will get freaked out

Thankfully its Spielberg on this, at least it has a good chance of being half decent, I just hope they get the american voice actors from the series for it. At least it's publicity for anime anyway and you cant get much bigger than Spielberg in the industry.

Voice actors are usually just voice actors for a reason though so I doubt if they will take any part in a live action version.

Could of sworn it's a real life version, i don't see the point in making another animated version as there already is one.

Now thinking of it, the 3-D is probably for the Tachikomas.

Im still awaiting the Monster live action too.

Well i always wanted a Ghost in the Shell live action movie but i had conditions.
1 of the conditions were the CG had to be done by one of the top cg teams like ILM (star wars, transformers, iron man) or WETA (Lord of the Rings, King Kong) or i would even take the team that did the Matrix movies and Speed Racer.

If the movie doesnt get any of these CG teams then i will not even consider seeing it.

Other conditions were like cast and staff.

Who could play Motoko though? I cant think of anyone that would fit.

Let's just hope they keep all the hardcore yuri stuff from the manga out of this film. Nothing would irritate me more than it's inclusion.

I would of thought that, being Hollywood as it is right now, they would just remake the animated film into Live Action which doesn't include the Yuri.

It does include nudity, that can easily be cut out. Also, would they keep Motoko's hair purple?

Well looking at it she is nude in most of the film, but i'm sure they will just put a suit on or just keep the clothes on and insist the clothers go invisible with the camo.

Well, SMG's hair is Blonde/Brunette but she had to go Red for Daphne in Scooby Doo, I don't see why an actress wouldn't get her hair dyed purple or wear a wig for a good film role. But actually then again her hair isn't exactly "purple" in the film like it is in the tv series.

If anything it's more black.

As for who would play the role? well I guess there are many women who do mostly action, Angelina Jolie springs to mind lol.

Please no Jolie.
Total LOL at SMG too.

I was thinking of the series , I dont think Jolie could pull it off either, she hasnt got the hard edge to her, you need someone thats good looking but is intimidating but not in a cheesy way (SMG), Riply from Alien would be the closest match. The casting crew have thier work cut out, I think Batou will be easier to cast.

I dont think Spielberg can mess this up too much. I agree the casting for Motoko will be hard. Now I shall wait until Battle Angel Alita, Evangelion and maybe Armitage gets done.

Spieldberg is amazing guys... why so much beef agaisnt him? The only really "Bad" flick he ever did was War of the Worlds.

I certain wouldn't call ET, Indiana Jones, Poltergeist (producer, but he had a big say in it), Amistad bad at all! He's an amazing director.

It's not so much Spielberg, it's just the state of Hollywood remakes, i can only name one good one out of like a million.

Vulgotha
April 19th, 2008, 09:11 PM
Hm... I think that The Thing, The Bourne Identity (entire series) are fairly good, being remakes and adaptations of books. It just boils down to the studio doing it, and more importantly the director.

But I see your point.

Sorry for the bad news guys but Speilberg is not directing it.
He just convinced Dreamworks to buy the rights., but then again i hear he loves Ghost in the Shell so maybe he will decide to do it.
On the remake discussion The Departed was a remake of a i believe a Hong Kong flick with a different name and the Departed won movie of the year. So get a great director and cast and dont f*** up the story and you got a great movie.

Now thinking of it, the 3-D is probably for the Tachikomas.
By 3D they most likely mean stereo image, meaning own picture for each eye.

If they do not dumb it down and keep it in true for the originals, it might very well be one of the better movies coming in couple of years.
I really hope they will not change location to US and add some newbie character to be the lead..

I would rather have it in his hands. But yeah, hopefully it isn't really STUPID and TERRIBLE. I LOVE the first GITS movie, I hope this one isn't terrible.
