I came across this while in the Official PS3 Forums I was going to buy the Blu-Ray boxset as well can anyone with this movie from the boxset and a 40GB PS3 test it see if it does do these problems.
But if you have it as a individual blu-ray can you also test it as well it could be a transfer problem with the boxset version.

I have the 60GB and it plays just fine. My friend has the 40GB and he says that it plays fine as well

I also had this problem. Put the disc in, it would spin up, but nothing. The PS3 wouldn't recognise it, and it also wouldn't cause any errors. I exchanged the disc for another one and the problem was still there. I hooked the PS3 up to the wireless and downloaded the latest update (at this time is was something like 2.43?) after which the disc worked fine.
One thing I noticed, this was the first disc I've watched where I was prompted by the PS3 as to whether or not I would allow the disc access to the internet. I'm guessing it has something to do with Bluray profile 1.1. I also have read that the 1.1 profile was only added to the PS3 through a firmware update. Spiderman 1 & 3 didn't do this. Only 2. Coincidence?
Anyway, I hope this might be of some help to someone.
