THUGGEDOUT

So, what in your opinion is the best movie trilogy, is it:

The Matrix

LOTR

Bourne

X-Men

Spider-Man

The Godfather

Or is there another trilogy you think is the best?

My favourite trilogies are:

Star Wars IV-VI
Indiana Jones
X-Men
Spiderman

But coming in at number 1 is :

Back To The Future

Not trilogies, but close enough.

Lethal Weapons.

Die Hards.

Of the ones you said, I'd say LoTR followed closely by the Godfather. The Godfather would win if the 3rd one was better. The first 2 are great movies though.

I'd have to name a couple because i couldn't name just one

The Vengeance Trilogy (Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Lady Vengeance)

Back to the Future

The Terminator

The Evil Dead

I wouldnt say comic book movies, Spiderman, X-men etc, or movies like Die Hard or Lethal Weapon were trilogies because they dont have a single story told over all 3 movies. Unlike LOTR's or The Matrix, dont know about Star Wars cause of the prequels. Im probably looking too far into this.

Sod it.

LOTR's
Bourne
Star Wars
Die Hard
Lethal Weapon

In no order.

For me it would have to be Indiana Jones.
-Lord of the Rings goes to 2nd place because it was weird how Peter Jackson did some things like Aragorn getting his sword in the 3rd movie when he was supossed to get it in the 1st. Also the 1st movie did the 1st book and some of the 1st few chapters of the two towers but the two towers movie didnt even finish the book so the last movie had to play catch up and do its own book.
-I like star wars but i dont consider it best trilogy material.
-1st Matrix was the only good one so definetly not worthy.
-Bourne movies were great but i was a little dissapointed with the 3rd one i dont know i guess i was expecting too much. so i overhyped it.
-Spiderman 3 and X-men 3 sucked majorly so definetly not worthy.
-Die Hard 2 wasnt that good imo and all 3 movies of the trilogy have to be great for it to be nominated so sorry Die Hard.
-I found the Godfather movies incredably boring so i will just leave it at that.
-Back to the future were great popcorn flicks but not worthy of best of best imo.
-Leathal Weapons were pretty good but again i dont consider them worthy.
-Terminator 1 was good, Terminator 2 was epic, Terminator 3 was meh so not worthy.
-All the Evil Dead movies are different like 1 was a straight up horror movie and 2nd was more horror comedy and the 3rd was a comedy with horror setting. i liked them all but i wouldnt say its the best of the best.
-Alien 3 sucked so there goes the Alien trilogy.

The Matrix.

I think Blade could have had potential to be a very good trilogy, until David Goyer decided he could direct, too bad Guillermo Del Toro couldn't direct the third one...

*Great, I gotta come out from left-field with one*

I'm a big fan of the Taxi series - not the awful American single film but the French trilogy. Fast, furious and a whole lot of fun.

And how about Bladerunner - director's cut, theatrical release and original cut? :) Guess they don't count despite being three different stories ^^

Too many!

Both SW [Having watched them back to back many times I've realised all the films are great and work real well with each other making it impossible picking a favourite.]
Indiana Jones.
Die Hard. [What the hell was Die Hard 4?!]
Lord of the Rings extended versions, it's like watchign a whole new series.

Star_Waters
April 18th, 2008, 11:44 PM
these would have to be my top five trilogies

1 - Back To The Future (o' course)
2 - Indy Jones
3 - The Lord Of The Rings
4 - Resident Evil
5 - Neverending Story

yes i know some wierd choices there but i like wierd

Alkali
April 19th, 2008, 05:13 AM
Star Wars IV-VI
Bourne trilogy
LOTR trilogy

In that order...

Matrix was ruined by 2 and 3, Die Hard 2 & 3 were soft in comparison to 1. Aliens had a shot, but overacting nailed them for me.

Ok i thought it over and i made my top 3

1 - Indiana Jones
2 - Lord of the Rings
3 - Pirates of the Caribbean

I think the new Batman Trilogy might replace one of those but the last one could take 3-5 years to come out so it will be awhile.

Star Wars VI - VI..EPIC movie.

I only liked the first Matrix movie, the others were good but ruined it for me.

I agree. A large part of the appeal in The Matrix was how fantastic the concept was (though not exactly original) and the special effects, which are still amazing even now, which is no small feat in an industry that moves as quickly as entertainment technology. The other two films in the trilogy needed to step up storytelling and acting to be able to follow the first one, because simply banking on continued good effects/concept didn't carry them far enough.

Personally, I think the days of the Epic Trilogy are kind of over. LotR was fantastic, and (I believe) an exception to this statement, but franchises like Spidey or *shudder* the new Star Wars movies don't really count. Classic Star Wars, classic Indie, Back to the Future -- these are the movies that'll come up for decades to come when the word 'trilogy' is said.

Well, after everyone's done sighing over Tolkien.

Well, I think a lot of people might argue that Last Crusade was the 1 in the trilogy to ruin it. That if nothing else, it was vastly inferior to the other two. Not sure I agree, but I'm going to be rewatching it tonight as my final preparation for Thursday. Hee.

Awww, you poor people, never saw Land Before Time as kids! I cried like a baby (well, I guess I kinda was at that point) all through the first one.

Aside from the fact that it's not really a trilogy (there were like 12 of them or something in the end) I also wouldn't say it's the best ever, except facetiously. ;) But man, I haven't thought of those movies in a looooong time. I'd say I need to go back and rewatch, but I expect they're better in my memory than they would be in real life, watched again as an adult. Like Fern Gully. :P

Nah, Indiana Jones is still a trilogy. It's a trilogy with a sequel. There's a distinct three-movie segment, and just because they add a fourth 20 years later, doesn't mean the original's not a trilogy. :) It's not like you're going to say Star Wars IV-VI isn't a trilogy, right?

None of those had a classic enough feel to me. For a trilogy to be really great, all three movies have to be good (not true, in my opinion, of The Matrix or Austin Powers). I've only seen Bourne Identity and Supremacy, and while I liked them, it didn't feel trilogy epic.

I think I agree with Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and LotR. Best trilogies, in my opinion. For LotR to be up there with the classics, it has to be really good... and it is! :D

I've seen the extended versions of Fellowship and Two Towers, but not RotK. It's one of those things where I keep trying to brace myself for like 5 hours, knowing that once it's done I'll have watched it all and it'll be over, and there won't be any more to see...

I think our definitions of "trilogy" in terms of movie discussions might differ... I tend to treat it more than the literal definition of a story with three installments, and more as a cohesive unit that has to be considered in the context of Cinema -- Star Wars just broke so many boundaries and continues to be huge in the eyes of kids and adults everywhere, despite its age -- along with Indy. Lord of the Rings was so incredibly epic in terms of taking such a well-beloved book trilogy and converting it to film form, doing such amazing stuff with CGI (Gollum, omg), having great acting and absoultely beautiful music and costuming. It is to me now what I imagine Star Wars was back in the day.

For the Bourne movies, I didn't even remember there were three of them until you said it. I think they're fun movies, and I definitely enjoyed them, but they're hardly... epic (I keep using that word, can't think of any betters ones). They don't do anything new or wonderful, either in story, acting, costume, effects, anything like that. And Austin Powers is funny, but not hilarious, and the jokes get old, and I can't even remember the third one, because to me Mike Myers wears on you... and I was tired of him by watching the third movie in the series, definitely not something I could rewatch over and over through the years and still find brilliant. Not really a trailblazer or a keepsake.

Of course, this is my opinion, I know plenty of people who think it's awesome. Just putting my two cents in.
