Hi,

My setup:
PS3
Onkyo 605

So i was watching the blu-ray of I AM LEGEND using the Dolby-True HD track and i was kinda disappointed since i heard it was a really good track..
but i didn't think it was anything special.. and yes i set the ps3 to lpcm when listening to true-hd tracks. Then i set the ps3 to bitstream and chose the normal 5.1 track and it sounded so much better (louder, fuller, clearer).
So my question is: is this because the ps3 did the decoding for the true-hd track and my reciever did it for the normal 5.1 track ? if so then the internal decoding of the ps3 must suck compared to the 605, because i've listened to true- tracks on my hd-dvd player (toshiba hd-ep35) which can bitsream true-hd tracks and they always sound better then the normal 5.1 track.
?????? :-? :-?

the cheaper Onkyo`s are not as good audio quiality as the dearer ones..... my mate has got the Onkyo 875, uncompressed multichannel pcm 5.1 sounds much better than DD-5.1 (from casino royale bu-ray)

Ok, lots of bad information going on here.

First of all the PS3 cannot bitstream TrueHD, so you aren't hearing TrueHD when you do that. Second of all the PS3's decoding of TrueHD is 100% accurate, so you are hearing all there is to here.

The 605 is a lower end unit and cannot preform extra bass management to incoming tracks such as these. So possibly this is your "issue".

I own I Am Legend and have listened to it on the PS3 while being decoded and through my BD30 Panasonic Blu-ray player while being bitstreamed and they are basically identical in sound and quality.

DOn't worry your PS3 decodes digital sound better then any odd reciever.
Frankly with 2.30 firmware not only it does DD-THD now it does 100% DTS:MA too.
Your reciever just going to get a good stream of PCMs pumping into it.

What do you mean "any odd receiver"? As long as its done properly, its done. The only benefit to having your receiver do it is a clocking issue... but thats like WAY down on the list of issues that can effect quality. Basically its exactly the same.

Some receivers cannot apply certain bass management or post processing onto certain signals, we know the 605 is one of them.

That's what I meant.
You better off getting good LPCM from PS3 then decode it on a low end reciever.

it has nothing to do with the ability of the 605 to decode the signal....the problem lies in what Reflex stated....the 605 cannot apply a lot of its extra audio processing to multichannel PCM or Dolby True HD or DTS:HD....you're still getting the same track, it is just higher end receivers can apply some extra pop to the track....

?????? :???: :???:

as far as PCM is concerned you've got a couple choices...."Direct" or "multichannel" multichannel gives much more "bang" than Direct does....pop the movie back in and using the receiver's remote click on the receiver button and hit the "display" button a couple of times....should get a couple different things on the screen....at one point you will see either "direct" or "multichannel"...

if it says "direct" do me a favor....

right above the display button there is a row of buttons for "listening mode"....while it still displays direct on the screen hit the button labled "surround" until it displays "multichannel" on the screen....you should lose audio for a second or two, but it will come back....tell me if you think the sound is better....

I STILL throw a mini temper tantrum at my computer every time you refer to the 605 as a low end unit! :-D  :DD

Just for you info PS3 does sound dithering, noise sharing and sound shaping too.
Anyway it just amazed me that CELL can easily do DTS:MA while decoding FULLHD H.264.

I've noticed that the Dolby Digital track is louder on my 605 as well. Note that I said louder. Not necessarily better. I would be interested to see others do a A-B switch between the two and see if the Dolby Digital track is louder than the DolbyHD track as well on their recievers.

To the op, if you dont think the ps3 is as loud as the receiver all you have to do wile waching a movie is press triangle and scroll over to volume control. then you can turn the ps3's internal volume to +2.
