Has anyone been watching this recently? I found it completely amazing, but something has left me completely stumped :(

First off, Shinsen-Subs released a .avi version a week or so ago. Last night Gattai released their version, in HD as well in .mkv format.

That aside, the content of each release is profoundly different. I'm meaning completely different scenes, music, dialog and event progression. They both have scenes missing from the other. Shinsen has more fighting, Gattai has much less. Shinsen version is 26:55 , Gattai is 24:29.

Might anyone be able to shed some light on this? I've been trying to find information on it, but pretty unsuccessfully so far :(

And for the record, I would recommend getting the Shinsen version. It might look worse, but the better (and more numerous) action scenes are worth it.

Major changes to the second half of the episode:

Concert Scene Gattai version:
The Air-Force squadrons are prepped and launched before the Fairy's concert starts. The concert, and focuses on the girl dancing and singing. After the opening climax of the song dies down, it shows the human fighters engaging the enemy, and then some human fighters being destroyed. Alto acts impulsively and screws up the flight routine. The concert is disrupted as Alto collides with the Fairy. He then carries her around the concert hall and she continues to sing. Earlier Alto compliments the fairy, and at the end says 'Wow, you're great."

Concert Scene Shinsen-Subs Version:
Human fighters are prepped and launched during the start of the concert. At the climax of the concert song's opening they engage the enemy. Footage of the concert is briefly shown inbetween fierce fighting between the human pilots and the Enemy. As the human squadrons are completely wiped out Alto blandly says "What makes her the Galactic Fairy?".

So a lot more action is seen, but a lot less character interaction between the two versions. Also, in the final part of the episode:

- Shinsen Version shows how the enemy actually gets into the Frontier Dome. Gattai does not.
- Difference in song use. Gattai version uses the song at the start of the scene. Shinsen version has the song played once the elite pilots transform into that mecha version, which is a lot later in the fighting.

Less Important but quite significant Differences:

- At the start of the show, Shinsen shows the singer known as the Galactic fairy coming in to land on Frontier before a brief history of the Macross Universe is shown. Gattai starts with the brief history.

- Shinsen shows the male dancers practicing their flight techniques and bantering near the start. Shows them again later arguing before Alto does a short flight on his own. In the Gattai version, none of the male bantering is shown. It only shows Alto performing his short flight.

- Gattai has a new scene showing the guys backstage, where they briefly encounter the Galactic Fairy, and we see her acting quite rudely.

- Shinsen shows the use of unmanned spacecraft battling the enemy and being destroyed earlier in the episode. Gattai does not have this scene.

The Shinsen version was released on Christmas of last year, unless I missed a release (I doubt it). The day before, a Director's Cut (aka preview edition) version of the raw was released, so I'm going to assume that Shinsen used that raw, which I guess had more content.

Gattai used the raw version broadcasted a couple weeks ago so that's probably why stuff there's parts missing.

Ah, that would definitely explain it then. Did more browsing and yeah, Shinsen is the preview version.

Shinsen version - 2007-12-25
Gattai Version - 2008-04-11

Unsure how to take this though. I quite liked the preview version, the concert scene was far more dramatic and powerful. The new content in the more recent version is nice, but yeah, the stuff that's missing I feel was slightly more important =/

The differences you are seeing are between the different airings of the first episode. The first time it was aired in December, and when it was re-aired in April (when the series actually started airing on a weekly basis) show slightly different footage. The December airing is refered to as the 'Deculture' edition.

I believe I read somewhere that the first dvd/blu-ray release will have an extended version of episode 1. I would assume this just means they are going to include the footage from both versions on the retail release.

edit:
Just found where i read about the extended version of episode 1 being on the retail release:
http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=BCXA-40

Regular feature is the version aired in April
Special features include:
Episode 1 Deculture Edition (27 minutes / Broadcast December 2007)
Episode 1 Yachdeculture Edition (complete version/32minutes)
