http://images.blu-ray.com/news/icons/movies.gif Blockbuster, the popular video rental chain, has announced that starting this week, they will offer Blu-ray rentals and sales in all of their corporate locations, in both the US and Canada. Previously, Blockbuster only offered Blu-ray in about 1,700 stores nationwide, but with this new announcement, that number will increase to nearly 5,000 retail outlets.
At each of the locations, Blockbuster will install a Blu-ray kiosks that feature a 42 inch high definition TV displaying Blu-ray movies via a Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) (http://www.blu-ray.com/players/players.php?id=3). This will help drive the fact that if a consumer owns a PS3, they also own a very capable (in some instance, the most capable) Blu-ray player.
David Podeschi, Blockbuster Senior Vice President, Merchandising, Distribution and Logistics commented, "Blockbuster was the first national retailer to accurately recognize and react to consumers' preference for this format when we added Blu-ray discs to a large percentage of our stores last summer. Now, with this national rollout, we believe Blockbuster is perfectly positioned to drive consumer adoption of this next generation DVD format and to become the customer's headquarters when it comes to renting or buying Blu-ray movies, whether in-store or online."
Blockbuster will also support their local franchises by offering up support for adding Blu-ray to their locations.

Now the real question is: How much is BB going to charge to rent a BD?

When DVD's became popular did they charge extra for it, I don't remember. If anything I'm sure they'll charge a couple dollars more. Still a safer pick then to pick a blu ray and the movie stinks.

You might want to look in Block Buster now. All the Holloywood videos around me are shutting down.

YES! I had to drive 5 miles out of the way to rent Blu-Ray movies before. now I can get it just a mile up the road. Now if they'd only drop the rental price since it's going mainstream. But I doubt it.

this is good to hear, only one of three blockbusters around me carried blurays, it was the farthest one and had the worst selection

Cool, looks like I might have to get a membership. The only problem that here in Toledo there is like 4 stores and each one is like 15 minutes or father away from me in the south end. (Yeah Toledo is actually a decent size city when it comes time to drive any where to get any thing)
Any one knows how much they cost to rent or how long you can rent them for.
Here in Toledo we have Family Videos every where and the manger at the store by me told me they wouldn’t be renting Blu-Ray any time soon.

Well I answered my own question... went to Blockbuster to rent a BD (grabbed I am Legend) and it was the same price as the other rentals:$4.99
I'll probably buy more than I rent, but it's a good option to have. I do have to say the selection wasn't amazing though, I'm sure that will improve with time.

Yeah, it's weird. They put the prices up for everything, like, "New Release DVD - $4.99, New Release blu-ray Disks - $4.99".
Why not just say all new release rentals $4.99? Bunch of puddin' heads working at Blockbuster.

This blows for me as the Blockbuster by me has closed down and there are literally no other rental stores in the area!

My wife stopped by the Blockbuster by her Dad’s house and rented 300. She said they had small selection Blu-Ray movies (she really didn’t say how many). Like the man above said $4.99 to rent and she said they even sell them. The guy at Blockbuster told her it would only be additional $25.00 to buy and we get to keep the rental for a week. Hay it’s a start
PS Her uncle was at her Dad’ house bragging about his new HD DVD player and the deal he got. My wife quickly brought him up to speed and he wasn’t as happy with his new purchase.

The Hollywood video by my place that opened late last year is closing down. They are having a sale on all DVDs. What's going on with Hollywood Video?

You got the puddin' heads part on the nail, they got separate price listings for DVD and BD.... but everywhere in the store they have a "every rental is a 5 day rental" poster flying, which doesn't say anything about SDDVD's or BD's! Talk about inconsistent. Oh well.... I guess I can put up with it
