I was ordering paprika on blu-ray to rent the other day and thinking about when more anime will be high def.

Then the thought occurred to be that most anime is captured in 4:3 ratio, with stereo sound. Since this is the case I was wondering whether the publishing companies would bother to rework anything for high def, or possibly just stick to using DVD as the format.

With anime movies it's different obviously since many are shot in widescreen, and if they aren't its easy to change with 2 hours of footage rather than a 10 hour box set.

I myself want some high def anime because it would simply look brilliant, and I'm now concerned it might be a very long wait. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this issue.

No idea, but I wonder if they would put more than 4 episodes per disc with blu-ray.

I was wondering that, but if its higher quality audio and visuals than standard DVD with extra features etc, then it'll probably work out the same (and I can't see them using massive capacity disks).

Box sets will be expensive at first I'd imagine, considering that DVD boxsets are now pretty cheap compared to only a couple of years ago.

Yeah, I've seen that one too. I know with movies that it's going to be a simple transition, I think we'll have all the ghibli films, akira, perfect blue etc on blu ray pretty soon. Its just the series' that I'm thinking of more than anything.

I've been on an HD anime stint lately, it's seriously addicting stuff. Anime in HD hasn't yet become mainstream so there are only a few releases here and there. The only decent series that have been released on Blu-ray are AIR (upscaled :() and Utawarerumono.

Almost all anime are airing in 720p atm...not sure if they're upscaled or true 720p though i'm guessing upscaled...not 100% sure about Shakugan no Shana II.

"The Daughters of Mnemosyne" and "Ayakashi" are SD or 480p I think.

True Tears, Ookami to Koushinryou, Rozario+Vampire, and Ghost Hound (I think Gundam too?) are being broadcast at 1080i or 1080p. However, I don't think there's any plans to release those as BD, except Gundam.

Clannad was supposed to be released as BD, but that was scrapped. This is one of the few UHF series that's being broadcast in 4:3...though it's being followed up with a 2 week delay as 16:9.

Admittedly, I'm not getting them through legitimate channels ;)

Anime are going HD in full force later this year.
It amazed me how Aniplex is so slow, when it's own by SONY.

They should. Lost has 6 episodes per disc (single layer).

Heheh, I'll have to agree with that last comment. In any case, the majority of anime are currently in HD. Hopefully fansubs will start doing higher quality releases.

Atually if the anime is made HD, that is master in 720p or 1080p.
In Japan they need to put the Produce in HiVision sign on it, at least it use to be like so.
Macross Frontier amd God Gears are both produce in HD.
The problem is a lot of produce in HD anime are transmitted in SD!!!
The things is since last year you get all sorts of mixes.
I personally gave up, if you are buying BD it will say if it's HD master or not.
As for fan sub people who cares.
