i'v had my ps3 60gb since october and has worked perfecly for me and iv been gaming nearly every day until... i got error code 80010514!

i was playing cod4 with my friends when the game decided to lock up on me, so i tried to quit the game via PS button and ps3 bleeped 3 times then a blank screen, so i restarted it by holding I/O button down for a couple of seconds. then when i loaded up cod4 it worked fine but the music looped the same bit over and over again. i just thought if i load up the level it will work properly, but i was wrong the game crashed agin so i restarted my ps3 again. but this time the game did not work, instead a lovely error message came up informing me that my ps3 is DEAD!

when i press X on the game it displays the PLAYSTATION 3 thing, then a blank screen, then an error message saying "(80010514) An error occured during the startup operation"
it does this with everygame i put in so it cant be COD4's fault

Can someone tell me how to do warranty thing PLEASE

i figured that i will have to ring SONY and get a new ps3 but i dont want a 40gb model. also i got my ps3 from GAMESTATION it cost £425. i still have the ps3 receipt and the box and everything

Please don't double post.~Hockeydude30

This error code revolves around the Blu-Ray drive. I've read this on other forums and ask.com about people having the same problem. Apparently it's a fatal error and you need to return it to Sony to either get fixed or have your system replaced.

Also, I'm sure Sony has 60gb replacement consoles. If they don't you would more then likely get a call from then and probably some sort of reimbursement. I wouldn't worry about that.

Why is it that every time this happens to someone's PS3, they were playing Call of Duty 4. It's either coincidental or something's up.

they'll either fix your 60gb you sent in or give you a refurbished 60gb, they aren't going to give you a 40gb

Or maybe because that's what everybody's playing, all the time. I'm pretty sure that if something happens to my ps3 (knocking on wood), CoD4 will be inside at the time

A lot of people bought the game and plays it a whell of a lot? It starts to feel like the green house gas debate. What is the cause of X?

You will lose all your data stored on hdd. Make sure you back up everything as for your online downloads will remain there it stores on your PSN account. Happened to me the first time I put in Skate. The sooner you call Sony the faster you'll get a replacment unit. Act now!lol

so how do i back up the data

Use a memory card, USB memory stick ( MP3 player if you like) or EXT.HDD and copy the files to there.
When you get a clean PS3 (formatted or new), then just plug the memory device back in & copy the files. They should save back to the original sources automatically.

There is an option in the settings somewhere to back up all your files like saved games etc.

As for warranty, look the number up in your manual for your local area.

instead of backing up the data, cant i just keep my hard drive and use it for the new ps3?

instead of backing up the data, cant i just keep my hard drive and use it for the new ps3?

This will only work if they decided to fix and ship you back your old unit otherwise your old hard drive won't work with a new PS3, you'll ended up having to format the hard drive again for your new PS3 to recognize it meaning you'll lose all data stored on there.

I think most everyone owning a PS3 is hooked on COD4 considering that the game was done right from the get go and the multiplayer is fun as heck.

Pffft....If you say so:rolleyes:
There are son many basics they got wrong online & offline that just take away from game play value.

Yes, they did get some very nice touches very right...but nothing that over-rides the issues it has.

This has nothing to do with what bluray is inside the system. That's like saying a certain type of pizza will break the oven.

I don't agree. I have the problem playing uncharted. Every other game I tried seems to work fine though.

Having said that I think I have only played GT5P since, maybe it doesn't access the disk in the same way as most of it is installed on the HD. I'll have to try some others tonight.

I have exactly the same problem with Legend-SAM (http://www.ps3forums.com/member.php?u=55867). I was playing the same game and everything hapenned as he writes.. I'm really disappointed because it is unbelievable.. I payed for a console which is a Sony brand, 660 euros and less than a year passed and now this error appeared from no-where!! I will ring Sony Hellas tomorrow and see what I can do... I have no words. Really!!

I made a search through the internet because a friend of mine, told me that maybe this error refers to the HDD. Soo maybe with a system restore, everything will be as new. But, I read somewhere that someone had exactly the same problem, he did a system restore, but there were no positive results. The problem still occured!! The day after he made a call to Sony and I think he replaced his old PS3 with a new one.

I wouldn't worry about a lens cleaner and all that as you already rang them up and they are coming round in 2 days with a nice new one for you.

One thing I like about the England service (not sure who else does it) but I heard a lot people having to send them in and waiting to get it back etc...Here they just come round and it's a straight swap.

2 days is not a bad turn around at all, that's what I call customer service for you.

I can't believe i am replying to a 6 month old thread, but here it goes
It's not on the scale of the dreaded (do you dare speak its name?) RROD, but lately, some attention's been focused on PS3 owners getting an error message which reads "An error occurred during the start operation. 80010514". Not as catchy as "Red Ring Of Death" then, either. Do you know what it means? I don't. The crew at GameRevolver reckon it's one of two things: a problem with your HDD, or the result of a faulty software installation. We'd now normally use this part to tell you what Sony think it is, but they haven't the foggiest, an SCEE rep telling Eurogamer "they aren't aware of this issue with the PS3". Man, those SCEE repair guys are laaaiiiddd back. That or, you know. There is no 80010514 [cue X-Files theme....]Source: http://kotaku.com/378576/sony-dont-know-what-error-code-80010514-is-either

Various sites have started squawking about a new error thrown by fussy PS3's, an error somewhat obliquely referred to as 80010514. It turns out the error's been around for awhile, and that when it happens, it manifests with some pretty broad causal latitude. Customers posting last year on the Official PlayStation Community (currently closed, but you can read the cached pages) report that the error occurs when inserting game or Blu-ray discs, but not DVDs. The complete syntax of the error message:
An error occurred during the start operation. 80010514
One customer on the cached page (http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:rlsotVx3a1MJ:community.eu.playstati on.com/showthread.php%3Ft%3D91875+80010514&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=safari) reported that "Ratchet & Clank froze (several times) and now when I try to load a game it gives me this error." Another on a different forum (http://www.absolute-playstation.com/playstation-network/expert-playstation-3-hardware-accessory-help-playstation3-ps3-console/9521-error-80010514-a.html) suggests the problem occurs when running a firmware update on a system from a non-matching region. Still another user on Sony's official PlayStation message boards speculates wildly (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=2323084&view=by_date_ascending&page=3) that it's "the blue-ray diode... it burns out in that model of the system." Don't you love how anonymity turns everyone into an armchair electrical engineer?
After confirming with Sony support that the error is in essence a catch-all for a system reset and noting that a factory default reset doesn't solve the problem, GameRevolver speculates (http://gamerevolver.com/article-114-PS3-Error-80010514-explained.html) (without confirmation) that it's "one of two things":
- A faulty sector on the internal hard drive.
- A bad firmware install.
Their recommendations to avoid the error are a little too general to take much stock in. Dust your PS3, make sure you have a stable internet connection, update your firmware properly, etc. Common sense, in other words, though it's not going to help any of you already getting the error -- the other allegation is that once the error occurs, you'll need a replacement PS3 from Sony. No ifs, ands, or buts.
Speaking anecdotally -- anecdotally, mind you! -- I've never seen the error (or any other) after over a year of frequent use. I've had three Xbox 360s go to pot (and had all three replaced, thank you very much for the first class customer service Microsoft) but I'm still on PS3 numero uno, and just in case it matters, I run both systems side-by-side inside a large wooden cabinet without proper ventilation, and yes, they both get quite warm and fan-blade-whiny in the summer after extended play time.
If you do get the error, the best thing you can do is probably ignore most of the above, stay away from the junk speculation on most of the boards (unless you're into wrapping systems in towels and doing rain dances and lighting votive candles to resurrect the mechanically dead), and give Sony a call (http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=539). Unlike Microsoft's Xbox 360 "red ring of death" error, which several retailers were claiming was causing failures in the 30 to 33 percentile range (http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/004799.html), the 80010514 reset issue appears to be rare and occurring within the acceptable failure range for any piece of electronic equipment. If that changes, I'll be right back on top of it here.
Also, it's worth noting that the PS3 can (and does) throw a slew of error messages, some of which you'll find referenced in this thread (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1857127). 80010514 probably occurs more often because, as noted, it's a "catch-all" general reset.
Whatever the case, it would behoove Sony to get out in front of the "issue" in one form or another, before the rain dancers and candle burners start threatening ye obligatory class action lawsuits.Source: http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/006781.html

I want to make a question.. After a lot of reading through the net I read that this error refers to the HDD!! Maybe if I change the HDD and place a new one, everything become normal?? I think that this might be a solution because, many people say that blu ray movies and dvds play normal without any problems.. Only gamew have this error...

So it can't be the blu ray drive. Does anyone have an idea??

I'm quoting my own post that I wrote in February 2008, because July 2008 came and my ps3 died from the 80010514 error while playing CoD4. I send it in today with a message about the problem and I kindly asked them not to delete all my game saves, demos and games that are in the HDD. I guess they can do that since the error has to do with the lense and not with the hard drive. I'm totally pissed.

Ok here is the help everyone needs that DOES NOT want to send they're PS3's back to Sony for what ever reason. FIX IT YOUR SELF!!!! HOW? Here's the answer....

By now we all know that error code 80010514 is a PS3's worst nightmare because this means that your lens (hardware) is broken (Diodes died on the blu ray lens). There are no Firmwares,Addwares,Updates, or anything else that has to do with SOFTWARE that can help this problem. The only thing you can do now is have it fixed my someone else, OR you can look up a couple of tutorials and fix it YOURSELF! It's quite simple only looks hard. You can do it with 2 screwdrivers and a knife. What you will need to buy are the following.

PS 3 20gb, 60 gb, and 80 gb, you need to buy part number KEM-400AAA or KEM-400A. Then go on Youtube (Thank God for YOUTUBE) and find how to replace your Bu-Ray lens.

If you have a 40 gb PS3 it gets a little trickier. See sony realized that people could now fix them them selves so they were not making as much money on selling the parts to repair shops or not making any money from suckers that for some reason or another didn't have their receipt so they won't fix it without you paying.

Anyway, if you have a 40gb PS3 you will have to open it before you buy this part because it can come with either KEM-400AAA or KEM-410ACA. The KEM-400AAA comes with one lens and the KEM-410ACA comes with two lenses. My guess is that they did this so they can get the money buy selling these parts or fixing it themselves. Well I THINK that the KEM400AAA comes in the older versions of the PS3 40gb. But you will have to check yourself on that. Look at the tutorial, follow the steps and check which one you have then just buy it off of ebay ($40.00 to $80.00) take off a few screws and fix it.

Here's the link to how to open your ps 3 video. Do some research before you guys go crazy sending stuff to sony which will only send you a refurbished ps3 that belonged to someone else and it was broken and they fixed already with USED parts. If you replace your part with a NEW one then your PS3 is still NEW not refurbished.

Good luck to all and I'm happy to tell you this worked just fine for me.
I have a PS3 40gb that got the death code 80010514 3 months after I bought it and it came with the KEM-400AAA I looked at youtube followed how to disassemble it and changed it, and they have a how to re assemble for those of you that can't remember what screw goes where.
