Howdy folks,
Heres the story.
I was once really into anime movies about 4 years back, even preferring them over live action films for a while.
However my dvd rental place had the most bonk range you would ever see, so I sorta stopped watching them.
The other night I watched Howls Moving Castle on tv and it sparked my interest again.
I want to actually buy some this time and really build up a collection, but I have as much insight into the films as I do with astrophysics.
So, does anyone have any cool anime movies they recommend me?
Varying opinions appreci8ed
Cheers

Bible Black is a very good series, but as netbevit stated, not a movie. Watch it with the family.
Check out Discipline while you're at it.

Actually, I did.
I'm as shocked as you are.
Well, in that case. Spirited Away is another good one. Same studio too.
Edit: Well ****.
Eh, if you're into watching a full series like a movie then Samurai Champloo, and Shonen Bat are both good ones. It's true they're not movies but series'. They can however be watched like a movie and hold anime movie quality.

Subtle, lol.
Good watches none the less.

Porco Rosso, Kurenai no buta ( 1992 ) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104652/)
Very good movie from Ghibli, my personal favorite.
My Neighbour Totoro, Tonari no Totoro ( 198 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096283/)8 )
One of the better Ghibli movies.
There are a lot more, but those are the ones I remember to be heartwarmingly good.

Pom Poko, definitely. It really is quite unique, and wonderful in it's many styles of animation to convey atmosphere and mood. It's about a bunch of shape shifting foxes and deforestation =P

Orguss 02 is a 6 part mini series though it is about 3 hours long in total and an amazing mini series at that, about the length of a couple films. Macross Plus I'd recommend the series rather than the film, but then you get the series and the film in a boxset. Ok ok here's my recommendations:
Everything by Miyazaki Hayao/Studio Ghibli (already mentioned in this thread a million times)
Akira
Black Jack
Blood: The Last Vampyre
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
Memories - 3 shorts from Otomo Katsuhiro (who did Akira, Metropolis, and Steamboy)
Metropolis
Perfect Blue
Read or Die
Steamboy
Mael Duin

X is a great movie ONLY if you've seen the series or have read the manga. When I Watched it in 1995 I thought it was amazing but barely understood what was going on. In fact the film felt like it ended too quickly.

If you can't find Wings of Honneamise (pronnounced "hon-ni-a-me-say") then I'll gladly upload it for you, it's exceedingly hard to find this gem. I have it on video so I'll have to rip it for you if you can't find it.
Some other old classics are:
Megazone 23
Cyber City Oedo 808
Venus Wars
Lensman
A Wind called Amnesia
Landlock
Devilman
Those in bold are a must watch.

Akira (Great mind f*ck movie, good for fans of sci fi, explosions, guns and psycho drama, Akira has it all, and it ages well too.)
Ghost in the Shell (hugely famous Sci fi movie, quite a complicated and involved plot so if you're not into being mentally challenged you can just sit back and enjoy the action , much like Akira in this respect)
Grave of the Fireflies( Very moving and beautiful movie by Studio Ghibli. Although all of Ghibli's movies are great none of them are quite as good (for me) as Grave of the Fireflies. There's not much thats going on in this movie, not much magic or dragons and far away lands, its set in world war two and centers around two orphans struggling to survive. If you only watch anime for the special effects, the guns and the big *** robots then you might be dissapointed, but if you like drama too you'll probably love this movie.)
Paprika ( A very artistic movie, beautifully animated. Lots of mind f*ck moments too. It's about dreams and alternative identities and there are parts of the movie where you have to figure out whether it's all a dream or not.)
Tekkon Kinkreet ( To me this movie was very similar to Paprika. The art styles are very different but both movies are very vibrant and colourful and the screen explodes with colours and action. It's a very stylish movie, sometimes perhaps a little too much style over substance but overall very good. There's quite a bit of mind f*ck in here too)
Neon Genesis Evangelion ( Although NGE is actually an anime series, it does actually end with a movie ( The End of Evangelion.) For me NGE is the best anime series ever made, and the movie is just as brilliant, so I have to recommend it. At first glance it appears to be a giant robot anime show but about halfway through the whole show just does a U turn and turns into a psycho drama that's so deep and complex you'd have to watch it multiple times to understand what's going on. You'll learn that the robots and the explosions and the aliens are actually just the top layer and there's so much more to be gained from watching this show, it's very inspiring. Although it's more than 10 years old now I don't think there has been anything in the world of anime since NGE that is so inteligent and challenging. If you're getting tired of the usual big robots, the ninjas and the girls with big **** then you might really appreciate NGE. It's more art than anime, but it's still anime. Genius stuff, it's worth buying the series and movies for.
