What is this for? Does anyone know? Perhaps it has something to do with the unmentioned bd 1.1 support?

There was nothing mentioned about BD stuff in the update. I don't really have many BD movies, so I doubt I'll be able to figure it out.

Me too but i think nothing is going to happen , i only have 1 bluray movie , maybe some movies will support this feature & it will install some data on the hhd .. wonder why they allow us that we can delete this folder

That could be the file that allows the PS3 to playback new BD movies that might come with security features to prevent pirated copies from being made?

I read somewhere that new BD movies will have certain security features, and maybe this 1.1 data utility file is like a "licence" to allow its playback?

Man, I wouldn't go about deleting stuff like these so soon yet.

data utility... I believe is something that records information from the BDs played recently in the system. Not sure though. I think the 1.1 profile would probably be sitting in the system someplace safe.

You're dumb if you delete it.

Could be BD 1.1's local storage folder, which is required by the profile. Even if you delete the folder it'll more than likely just be re-made when playing a BD or restarting the system.

Sounds like the correct answer! ;)

Ok, I think I'm on the wrong track here.

I believe it's for the new PiP (Picture in Picture) type of feature that new BDs will have (much like the way HD-DVD has their PiP now). Can't remember where I read this - but I definitely read it somewhere just earlier...... :???:

Profile 1.1 need 256MB of space for data, don't know what the disk will use it for though.

it turns out that sony (and this is just wat ive heard from a reliable source) but sony will soon be allowing a p2p service for all ps3 owners and also it will soon be allowing people to download bd movies and regular movie off its shop so if i were you the only way to get that folder back that i know of right now is to restart the whole system or maybe when they allow this service the folder will come back so dont delete it u might just regret it

spamming isnt the way to pad your post count.

read through some threads and offer your opinion on the topic at least.
